| Designation | Pay Level | Entry Basic Pay | Pay Band (6th CPC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teaches classes 1-5 in primary section | Level 6 | ₹35,400 | PB-2 (9300-34800) GP 4200 |
| Teaches classes 6-10 with subject specialisation | Level 7 | ₹44,900 | PB-2 (9300-34800) GP 4600 |
| Teaches classes 11-12 with post-graduate qualification | Level 8 | ₹47,600 | PB-3 (15600-39100) GP 5400 |

Basic pay increases by approximately 3% per year through annual increments. Teachers receive additional increments upon promotion (MACP scheme — after 10, 20, and 30 years).
Government teacher salaries in India follow the 7th Central Pay Commission (7th CPC) structure. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how a teacher's monthly salary is computed:
Basic Pay is derived from the Pay Level assigned to the teacher's post in the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. For example:
DA is revised twice a year (January & July) by the central government to compensate for inflation. As of January 2026, the DA rate is 53%.
Common deductions for government teachers:
Here are two real-world examples showing how government teacher salaries are calculated under the 7th CPC with current DA at 53%:
| Basic Pay | ₹35,400 |
| DA (53%) | ₹18,762 |
| HRA (27% — Metro) | ₹9,558 |
| Transport (Metro) | ₹5,400 |
| Gross Salary | ₹69,120 |
| NPS (10%) | ₹5,416 |
| Professional Tax | ₹0 (Delhi exempt) |
| Net Take-Home | ₹63,704 |

As of March 2026, the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees including KVS, NVS, and state government teachers is 53% of basic pay. DA is revised twice a year (January and July) based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI).
A PRT (Primary Teacher) at entry level earns approximately ₹44,000/month in Delhi and ₹32,000/month in UP (take-home). The exact amount depends on DA rate, city classification, and state-specific allowances. PRT is placed at Pay Level 6 with entry basic pay of ₹35,400.
PRT (Level 6) starts at ₹35,400, TGT (Level 7) at ₹44,900, and PGT (Level 8) at ₹47,600 basic pay under the 7th CPC. The total salary difference is approximately ₹10,000–15,000 per month at entry level, increasing with increments and promotions.
Private school teacher salaries are set by school management and are not bound by the 7th Pay Commission. However, most states mandate minimum wages. On average, private school teachers earn 50–70% of equivalent government salaries, though top private schools may pay at par or higher.
Government teacher salary deductions typically include: NPS (10% of Basic+DA), Professional Tax (₹0–200/month depending on state), Income Tax (TDS) per applicable slab, and optional deductions like GPF, CGHS, LIC premium, and loan EMIs.
DA is revised twice a year — in January and July. The January revision is typically announced in March, and the July revision in September. Each revision is based on the average AICPI for the preceding 12 months.
HRA depends on city classification: X-cities (metros) get 27% of basic, Y-cities get 18%, and Z-cities (rural) get 9%. These rates were revised when DA crossed 50% in 2023. Teachers who own a house in the posted city cannot claim HRA.
States that currently do not levy Professional Tax include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu charge ₹200/month (₹2,400–2,500/year).
The 7th CPC Pay Matrix is a table with 18 pay levels replacing the old pay band + grade pay system. Each level has 40 incremental stages (cells) with approximately 3% increase per year. Teachers are placed in Levels 6–12 depending on their designation.
If a teacher takes leave beyond their entitled quota (CL, SL, EL), the excess days are marked as Loss of Pay (LOP). LOP deduction is calculated as: Per Day Salary = Monthly Gross ÷ Working Days, then LOP Amount = Per Day Salary × LOP Days. Use our Attendance-Based Calculator tab for this calculation.
