When NOT to Use × 9.5
The × 9.5 rule belongs to CBSE. Two common situations need a different approach:
- University degrees: most universities define their own CGPA-to-percentage formula (printed on the marksheet or issued as a conversion certificate). Use that — not the CBSE rule — for job and higher-study applications.
- 4.0-scale GPA: a US-style GPA of 3.5 is not "3.5 CGPA". It is a different scale entirely; multiplying by 9.5 gives a meaningless number. Use our GPA Calculator (4.0 scale) instead.
