Percentage bands vary between institutions; the grade point values above are the most widely used unweighted scale in the US and at international schools. Some high schools add +0.5 or +1.0 for honors/AP courses (a "weighted GPA") — that is a school-specific policy.
Worked Example
GPA = (4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.7×3 + 2.0×2) ÷ 12 = 3.36
Four courses: A (3 cr), B+ (4 cr), A− (3 cr), C (2 cr) → 40.3 quality points ÷ 12 credits
Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA
- Semester GPA counts only the current term's courses — that is what this page calculates by default.
- Cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers every term so far. To compute it here, add all courses from all terms as rows — the credit weighting handles the rest.

Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) by its credit hours, add these "quality points" up, and divide by total credit hours. Courses with more credits influence the GPA more.
A 3.0 (B average) is solid; 3.5+ is competitive for most graduate programs; 3.7+ approaches dean's-list territory at many colleges. Context matters — course difficulty and institutional grading norms vary.
Usually not. Most institutions exclude pass/fail (P/NP) credits from GPA computation, though the credits may still count toward graduation. Leave them out of this calculator.
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA (common in US high schools) adds a bonus — often +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for honors — so it can exceed 4.0.
There is no single official formula — universities use their own equivalence tables (WES, for example, evaluates Indian transcripts course by course). A rough approximation used informally is (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4, but never present that as an official conversion.
