Enter your current grade, how much the final exam is worth, and the grade you want — see exactly what score you need on the final.

What Score Do You Need on the Final?

The math behind it: Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. You don't need to work that out by hand — fill in the three numbers below.

How the Formula Works

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Example: current 78%, final worth 30%, target 85%:
(85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.3% — not reachable without extra credit; consider targeting 83% instead, which needs 94.7%.

Your course grade is a weighted mix of everything before the final and the final itself. If the final is worth 30%, your pre-final grade contributes the remaining 70%. That is why a strong term grade acts as a cushion: at 90% current with a 30% final, even a 55% final score still lands you at 79.5% overall.

Three Situations Worth Knowing

  • Required score over 100%: your target is mathematically out of reach on the final alone. Ask about extra credit, or set a target the calculator says is achievable.
  • Required score below 0%: you have already secured the target — even a zero on the final would not pull you below it.
  • Required score under your usual test average: you are on track; use the scenario table to see how much better you could finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Use: Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, with the weight as a decimal. For a 25% final, current grade 80%, target 85%: (85 − 80 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 100% needed.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

Your target cannot be reached through the final alone. Lower the target to see what is achievable, or ask your teacher about extra credit or grade replacement options.

My final counts as two test grades, not a percentage. What do I enter?

Convert it to a weight first: if you have 10 test grades total and the final counts as 2, its weight is 2 ÷ 10 = 20%.

Does this work for letter-grade targets?

Yes — convert the letter to the percentage cutoff your syllabus uses (e.g., A− = 90%) and enter that as the target grade.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. All calculations happen in your browser; nothing is transmitted or stored.
