The Formula: Why 9.5 and Not 10?
CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
Example: 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.9 CGPA
CBSE arrived at 9.5 by analysing the marks of students who scored the A1 grade (91–100 band) in previous board results. The average marks of A1 scorers worked out to roughly 95, so one grade point was equated to 9.5 percentage points — not 10. Dividing by 10 would understate the CGPA of nearly every student.

Does Every Board Use ÷ 9.5?
No — the 9.5 factor is a CBSE convention. Before using a converted figure on an application form, check which formula the receiving institution expects:
- CBSE (Class 10): Percentage ÷ 9.5
- Many universities (UGC pattern): some use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 in reverse, or a straight ÷ 10 — the exact rule is printed on the degree/marksheet or the university's conversion certificate
- Engineering universities (e.g. VTU, AKTU): publish their own conversion formulas that differ from CBSE's
- ICSE: reports actual percentage; no official CGPA conversion exists
When a form asks for CGPA and your marksheet shows percentage, the safest answer is the one produced by the issuing board's own formula — for CBSE students, that is the ÷ 9.5 result this tool gives you.
